Columbus Ohio Residents: Here’s Your Annual Metal Roof Maintenance Schedule

Jun 22, 2018

One of the nice things about metal roofs is that they require little maintenance compared to the other major roof types. On the other hand, all roofing types, including metal, benefit from a little maintenance to keep working at maximum efficiency. Follow these simple tips if you’re a Columbus homeowner, and you want to maintain your metal roof and keep it operating efficiently all year long.

1. Clear Your Gutters and Downspouts

Your gutter system plays an important role in your roof’s defense. Over time your gutters can become clogged with debris such as leaves, twigs, and other yard waste. Cleaning your gutter systems twice a year – preferably in the late spring and late fall – can help ensure that water drains from you gutters and doesn’t gather on the roof, where it can lead to damage. If you’re uncomfortable on a ladder, call a professional for help.

2. Give Your Roof a Wash

Metal roofs generally don’t require much maintenance, but washing them down with a garden hose twice a year can help them look their best. Again, shoot for late spring and late fall. In the springtime, hosing down the roof helps clear pollen off, and in the fall it helps get rid of dirt and acorns. You shouldn’t really notice any accumulation of algae or moss on your roof, but it might occur in exceptionally humid southern climates. If this occurs, try washing your roof with a power washer and a simple solution of 1/2cup trisodium phosphate per gallon of water.

3. Trim Trees Regularly

Tree branches hanging over your roof not only impact your home’s aesthetic, they also provide an entry point for invasive pests. Trimming tree branches essentially seals off a point of entry of your home and keeps pests from getting into your attic, where they can destroy the wooden decking underneath your metal roofing material.

4. Do a Visual Inspection

Lastly, take care to complete a visual inspection of your roof a couple times a year – you can do this in a few minutes using only a pair of binoculars. Look for any signs of loosening bolts, shingles, or panels. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact a roofing company and have them tighten them down. Don’t attempt roof repair yourself – contractors have the proper safety equipment and expertise to navigate your roof safely.

Your roof requires basic maintenance to keep it efficient for decades to come. By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of your roof and keep it looking good in the years ahead.
